Outside Lands: Quite Possibly the Most Gen X Music Fest Ever Created

San Francisco's answer to Coachella and Bonaroo, the Outside Lands Music Festival in Golden Gate Park, began last year and was a moderate success -- in no small part due to opening night headliner Radiohead.  The roster of performers over the three-day affair also included Beck, Jack Johnson, Steve Winwood and Tom Petty, as well as a number of younger and hipper acts.  As one friend familiar with the LA-twentysomething experience of Coachella put it, "The second two days it was all people our age or older, 30s and 40s, with their wine, smoking pot in lawn chairs, bundled up in the fog. None of this passing out in the sun on ecstasy bullshit."

This year's fest, minus Radiohead and plus acts like Dave Matthews Band and the deeply 90s-associated Pearl Jam (they have a new album, but please feel free to remind yourself of MTV mainstay ca. '93, "Jeremy" here), is sure to skew more heavily in the GenX direction, especially with the sometimes dubbed mini-Coachella of the Treasure Island Music Fest coming up in October with a younger and hotter lineup. Outside Lands also features things like wine tasting and excellent food vendors, which teens and twentysomethings tend not to give a shit about, so we feel like the demographic is pretty right on.

For today's TGITunes, we bring you this unofficial video for The National's "Fake Empire." They'll be playing a Friday set at Outside Lands, and speaking of Pretty in Pink, they did a cover of "Pretty in Pink" by the Psychedlic Furs and you can hear it here.  Buy their album on The National - Boxer.
